Are you passionate about wrestling and ready to take the next step? Becoming an accredited coach allows you to officially coach at the developmental level, ensuring you have the skills to lead sessions for both adults and children safely and effectively.

Follow this step-by-step process to obtain your Level 1 Wrestling Australia Coaching Accreditation.

Step 1: Prerequisites & Essentials

Before you dive into the specific wrestling coursework, there are several essential certifications, agreements, and checks you must complete. These ensure the safety and integrity of the sport.

• Working with Children Check (WWCC): You must hold a valid check relevant to your state or territory.

• National Police Check: A current police check is required.

• First Aid Certificate: You must hold a current First Aid qualification (e.g., HLTAID011).

• Wrestling Australia Membership: You must be a current member (Senior National Level or Coaches Membership).

• Coaches Code of Conduct: You must read, sign, and adhere to Wrestling Australia's Coaches Code of Conduct.

• Concussion Policy: You must read, sign, and adhere to the Concussion Policy to ensure athlete safety.

Step 2: Sport Integrity Australia Courses

Wrestling Australia requires all coaches to complete specific online education modules provided by Sport Integrity Australia. These are free and can be done at your own pace.

Required Modules:

1. Anti-Doping Fundamentals (Level 1)

2. Annual Update (Level 2)

3. Coaches Course (Anti-Doping specific for coaches)

4. Safeguarding Children and Young People in Sport Induction

Tip: Save all your completion certificates as you will need to email them in the next step.

Step 3: Community Coaching – Essential Skills Course (OPTIONAL)

Developed by the Australian Sports Commission, this course is highly encouraged for all coaches, whether you have been coaching for 2 weeks or 20 years. It gives you the knowledge and resources to create fun, safe, and inclusive environments for all athletes.

• Format: Online, self-paced learning.

• Content: 8 modules covering the needs of participants in current sporting environments.

• Cost: Free.

• Access: You can complete the modules anytime, anywhere, on any device via the Sport Australia website.

Step 4: Submit Your Documentation

Once you have gathered your prerequisites and completed the external courses, you must submit them to Wrestling Australia so they can be added to your official file.

• National Police Check

• First Aid Certificate

• Signed Coaches Code of Conduct

• Signed Concussion Policy

• Certificates of completion for all Sport Integrity Australia modules

Step 5: Wrestling 101 – Introduction to the Sport

This online course is the general prerequisite for all educational pathways (coaches, referees, and managers).

• What it covers: An overview of wrestling as an Olympic sport, its community, and the athlete/coach pathways.

• Action: Register and complete the Wrestling 101 course online via the Wrestling Australia Academy.

Step 6: Wrestling 201 – Course for Coaches (Theory)

Once you have completed the basics, you can register for the Wrestling 201 course. This is the core educational component for Level 1 accreditation.

• Format: Online learning modules.

• Content:

  • Role of the coach and safety measures.

  • Planning and organising sessions.

  • Communication skills with athletes and parents.

  • 15 fundamental technical wrestling skills.

• Assessment: You must answer questions in full detail during the modules. These are assessed by a Wrestling Australia accredited assessor.

• Outcome: Upon completion, you receive a "Certificate of Completion" for the online component.

• Cost: $250

Step 7: The Practical Examination

After passing the online theory (Step 6), you must demonstrate your skills in person.

• Requirement: Attend a practical assessment session (usually 1 day or 2-3 hours depending on the schedule).

• What happens: You will be assessed by an accredited assessor on your ability to deliver a micro-session, demonstrate technical skills, and apply coaching principles.

• Booking: Assessments are held in various states (e.g., VIC, NSW, ACT). Check the Wrestling Australia Events page or contact admin@wrestling.com.au to book a slot.

Cost

The total investment for Level 1 Coaching Accreditation is $250, which provides full access to the Wrestling 201 (Theory) online course.

Following the successful completion of the online modules, candidates are eligible to attend a scheduled practical assessment day. Please note that there are no additional fees for the practical assessment.
